Treatment for avian influenza in people

A clinician may begin treatment based on compatible illness and a meaningful bird or animal exposure rather than waiting for every result. The medicine, dose and route depend on clinical severity, age, pregnancy, kidney function and whether swallowing or absorption is a concern.

Antiviral medicines act against influenza viruses and are different from antibiotics. Antibiotics do not treat the virus, though they may be prescribed if a clinician identifies a bacterial infection as well. Supportive care can include fluids, fever relief, oxygen and monitoring.

Severe pneumonia can impair oxygen delivery and may require close hospital observation or breathing support. Treatment plans are adjusted as examination findings, oxygen levels and laboratory results become available.

Take prescribed medicine exactly as directed and contact the prescriber if vomiting, difficulty swallowing, a new rash or another concerning reaction occurs. Do not share antivirals, use old supplies or stop a course because symptoms have eased unless the treating clinician advises it.

Rest, drink enough fluid to maintain urination and follow advice on limiting contact with other people. Before taking non-prescription fever or pain remedies, check whether they suit your age, pregnancy status, kidney or liver health and current medicines. Keep follow-up arrangements even if you start feeling better.

Call emergency services for breathlessness at rest, persistent chest pain, blue or grey lips, confusion, fainting, inability to wake normally or rapid worsening. Do not wait for a scheduled follow-up when these features appear.

Seek prompt clinical review for reduced urination, repeated vomiting, inability to keep medicine down, worsening fever or cough, or improvement followed by a marked decline. Tell the team which doses were taken and whether new symptoms followed the medicine.

Confirm what each medicine is for, how to take it if nausea develops, which side effects need a call, and how follow-up will occur. Ask whether household members need exposure advice and what infection-control measures apply at home.
