Medical procedures for atrial fibrillation

The proposed approach may be electrical cardioversion, catheter ablation or, in selected circumstances, a pacemaker-related strategy. The choice depends on the rhythm pattern, symptoms, other heart conditions, prior treatment and personal priorities.

Electrical cardioversion delivers a controlled shock under sedation to reset the rhythm. Catheter ablation passes thin tubes through blood vessels to the heart and treats small areas that help trigger or sustain atrial fibrillation. A pacemaker does not remove atrial fibrillation, but it may be part of a rate-control plan if the heart's electrical connection is deliberately modified.

A procedure does not automatically remove the need for anticoagulation. Clot-prevention decisions are based on individual stroke and bleeding factors rather than symptoms alone or whether the rhythm appears regular afterward.

Follow the hospital's instructions about fasting and medicines exactly. Confirm which medicines to take on the day, especially anticoagulants and diabetes treatments, and arrange transport if sedation or anaesthesia is planned. Tell the team about allergies, implants, pregnancy possibility and any missed anticoagulant doses.

After discharge, use the written guidance for wound care, activity and medicines. Mild awareness of the heartbeat can occur during recovery, but record sustained or worsening symptoms. Attend rhythm checks even when you feel well, since atrial fibrillation can recur without obvious palpitations.

Get emergency help for chest pain, severe shortness of breath, fainting, sudden weakness or speech difficulty. After a catheter procedure, urgent assessment is also needed for uncontrolled bleeding or rapidly enlarging swelling at the access site.

Contact the procedure team promptly for fever, increasing wound redness, worsening pain, a cold or numb limb below the access site, or a sustained rhythm change. Use the specific discharge number when available because instructions vary by procedure.

Ask what the procedure is intended to improve, what alternatives fit your situation, which medicines continue afterward, what anaesthesia is used and what recovery restrictions apply. Clarify how recurrence will be monitored and whom to contact if symptoms return.
