Asymptomatic bronchiectasis

An imaging description alone does not show how active or clinically important the condition is. A clinician interprets it alongside breathing symptoms, previous infections, examination findings and lung-function results.

Bronchiectasis is lasting widening and damage of the breathing tubes. Mucus can be harder to clear from these airways, which can allow infection and inflammation to develop. Some people, however, have only mild or localised changes found on a scan performed for another reason and notice no daily respiratory problem.

The scan pattern may need review to confirm true bronchiectasis rather than temporary airway change during an infection. Medical history can reveal subtle features such as an intermittent wet cough, repeated antibiotic treatment, reduced exercise tolerance, sinus problems or childhood lung infections.

Arrange a non-urgent review with the clinician who requested the imaging. Bring the report and, if available, earlier chest images so the pattern can be compared. The review may include listening to the lungs, checking oxygen levels and spirometry to measure airflow.

Further testing is guided by the scan extent and health history; not everyone without symptoms needs airway-clearance treatment or medicine. Avoid smoking and inhaled irritants, keep recommended vaccinations up to date, remain physically active within your ability, and learn which respiratory changes should prompt contact.

Contact a clinician if a new cough persists, phlegm becomes a regular feature, sputum changes colour or amount, breathlessness increases, fever develops, or chest infections begin recurring. These changes may justify a sputum test, reassessment of lung function or a treatment plan.

Seek urgent care for coughing up more than small streaks of blood, severe or rapidly worsening breathlessness, blue or grey lips, confusion, fainting, or significant chest pain. Do not wait for a routine follow-up when breathing is acutely difficult.

Ask how extensive the airway changes are, whether older images show the same finding and whether the appearance could be temporary. Clarify whether you need spirometry, specialist review or repeat imaging, and what cough, phlegm, infection or bleeding pattern should lead to an earlier appointment.
