Short answer

Astigmatism can make lights look blurred, streaked or glaring, but marked light sensitivity may have another cause that needs assessment.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Visual effect
Blur, streaks and glare around lights can occur with uncorrected astigmatism.
Useful check
An eye examination can assess the prescription and look for other eye problems.
Urgent sign
Sudden painful light sensitivity or vision loss needs urgent assessment.

The short answer

Astigmatism changes how the eye focuses light. Glasses or contact lenses with an accurate prescription may reduce blur, squinting and glare, especially while driving at night or using bright screens.

How the two may be connected

With astigmatism, the cornea or lens has a shape that focuses light unevenly. Bright points may therefore appear smeared, haloed or stretched. This visual glare is different from photophobia, in which ordinary light feels uncomfortable or painful.

An outdated prescription, dry or irritated eyes, migraine and inflammation can also contribute. Conjunctivitis can present with redness, discharge and light discomfort, while meningitis can present with severe headache, fever, neck stiffness and light sensitivity. The symptom pattern matters more than astigmatism alone.

Practical next steps

Arrange an eye examination if glare is persistent, your vision has changed or your current lenses no longer help. The clinician can check visual acuity, refine the astigmatism prescription and examine the front and back of the eyes for another explanation.

Until then, reduce harsh reflections, adjust screen brightness to the room and take regular visual breaks. Clean prescription lenses and an anti-reflective lens coating may improve glare. Avoid wearing sunglasses indoors for long periods unless a clinician recommends it, because this may increase sensitivity to normal indoor light.

When to seek medical care

Seek urgent eye care for sudden light sensitivity with eye pain, a very red eye, sudden loss or dimming of vision, new flashes or many floaters, injury, or chemical exposure. Remove contact lenses if the eye is painful or red and do not put them back in until assessed.

Get emergency help when light sensitivity occurs with severe headache, fever, neck stiffness, confusion, weakness, trouble speaking or repeated vomiting. These combinations require prompt assessment and should not be attributed to astigmatism.

Questions for your clinician

Ask whether your symptoms sound like optical glare or true photophobia, whether your prescription has changed, and whether the eye examination shows dryness, inflammation or another cause. Mention whether one or both eyes are affected, what lighting triggers symptoms, and any headache, redness, discharge or vision change.

Questions people ask

Can correcting astigmatism reduce light sensitivity?

An accurate prescription can reduce blur and glare caused by uneven focusing. Painful sensitivity to ordinary light may persist if dryness, migraine, inflammation or another condition is responsible.

Does light sensitivity mean my astigmatism is getting worse?

Not necessarily. A prescription change can increase glare, but new or pronounced sensitivity deserves an eye assessment because astigmatism is only one possible contributor.
