Is there a vaccine for asthma?

Vaccination and asthma treatment have different jobs. Vaccines prepare immune defences against particular infections, while controller inhalers reduce airway inflammation and sensitivity.

Respiratory infections can trigger cough, wheeze or a flare in someone with asthma. Vaccines recommended for a person's age, health, pregnancy status, travel or work may lower the chance of certain preventable infections or make illness less severe. They do not remove asthma triggers such as smoke, dust or allergens.

Biologic injections used for some forms of severe asthma are sometimes confused with vaccines. Biologics target specific parts of inflammation and are specialist-prescribed treatment; they do not provide immunity to an infectious disease.

Keep taking prescribed asthma medicines around vaccination unless your clinician gives different instructions. Bring your vaccine record and medicine list to a clinic or pharmacy so the clinician can check what is appropriate and whether any dose needs different timing because of an acute illness or immune-suppressing treatment.

Expected short-lived effects can include soreness where the injection was given, tiredness, headache or fever. Tell the vaccinator about previous serious allergic reactions and remain for any observation period they advise. Have your reliever inhaler available as usual, without taking it pre-emptively unless directed.

Get emergency help after vaccination if breathing becomes difficult, the throat or tongue swells, widespread hives appear, faintness develops, or symptoms progress rapidly. These can be signs of a serious allergic reaction and should not be managed as an ordinary sore arm.

For an asthma flare, follow the urgent steps in your written action plan. Severe breathlessness, inability to speak comfortably, blue or grey lips, confusion, exhaustion, or failure to improve with prescribed rescue medicine requires immediate medical care.

Ask which vaccines suit your age and medical history, whether current asthma control affects timing, and what to do if fever or wheezing follows. If someone mentions an asthma injection, clarify whether they mean a vaccine or a biologic treatment.
