What should you know about asthma pump spacer?

It holds the aerosol briefly after the canister is pressed, allowing it to be inhaled through the mouthpiece or a fitted mask. Spacers are not designed for every inhaler type, including most dry-powder devices.

With a pressurised inhaler alone, pressing too early or too late can leave medicine in the mouth instead of carrying it into the airways. The chamber separates the spray from the inhalation, making timing less demanding and reducing medicine deposited in the mouth and throat.

A mask may be useful for someone who cannot form a reliable seal around a mouthpiece. It needs to fit closely over the nose and mouth so the aerosol is not lost through gaps.

Fit the inhaler firmly into the spacer, breathe out away from the chamber, then seal your lips around the mouthpiece. Release one puff into the chamber and breathe in according to the spacer instructions. If another puff is prescribed, prepare the inhaler again and deliver it separately rather than spraying several puffs into the chamber at once.

Follow the manufacturer's cleaning directions. Many plastic spacers are washed with mild detergent and left to air-dry without towel rubbing, which helps limit static that can trap aerosol. Inspect the chamber for cracks, a sticking valve, or a poor connection, and replace it when advised.

Get emergency help if breathlessness is severe, speech is difficult, lips become blue or grey, alertness changes, or symptoms worsen after using the reliever according to the asthma plan. A spacer can improve delivery, but it cannot make a serious asthma attack safe to manage without assessment.

Seek timely advice if the valve does not move, you hear persistent leakage around a mask, or usual doses are no longer controlling symptoms. The inhaler, spacer, technique, and asthma control all need checking.

Bring the inhaler and spacer together. Ask whether they are compatible, whether a mouthpiece or mask is appropriate, how your model should be cleaned, and when it should be replaced. Have the clinician watch your technique from assembly through inhalation.
