Assessment starts with a compatible symptom pattern and objective breathing measurements when these are suitable and available. Asthma often presents with variable wheeze, cough, breathlessness, or chest tightness. The condition may be considered even when a person feels well during the appointment because airflow changes can come and go.

Treatment is adjusted according to control, flare history, inhaler technique, adherence, and unwanted effects. Follow-up should also check triggers, smoking or vaping exposure, other conditions, and whether the written action plan remains clear.

Take your inhalers and asthma plan to routine reviews. Demonstrate how you use each device, describe nighttime symptoms and activity limits, and say how often reliever medicine is needed. Ask which findings support your diagnosis, what your breathing measurements mean, and what target shows that treatment is working. Confirm which inhaler is for regular control, which is for symptoms, and what specific changes mean you should step up emergency action or arrange review.
