Budesonide is an inhaled corticosteroid that treats inflammation inside the airways. Formoterol is a long-acting bronchodilator with a rapid onset that helps open narrowed airways. The combination can reduce ongoing symptoms and flare-ups when used correctly.

Some people are prescribed Symbicort only as regular maintenance treatment, while others are told to use it for both maintenance and symptom relief. The inhaler strength, device type, and written plan determine how it should be taken, so do not copy another person's schedule.

Use the technique for your specific device, because a pressurised inhaler and a dry-powder inhaler require different preparation and breathing. Keep track of remaining doses, replace the device before it is empty, and do not stop regular treatment simply because you feel well.

Rinse your mouth with water and spit after maintenance doses to lower the chance of oral thrush and hoarseness. Use the urgent steps in your written asthma plan when breathing symptoms escalate. Get emergency help for severe breathlessness, difficulty speaking full sentences, blue or grey lips, confusion, exhaustion, or symptoms that continue to worsen despite the inhaler prescribed for relief. A sudden deterioration should not be managed by taking unplanned extra doses.
