Asthma and fever

A viral or bacterial infection may raise body temperature while also causing cough, mucus, sore throat, fatigue, or nasal symptoms. In a person with asthma, the same infection can make already sensitive airways swollen and narrow, producing wheeze, chest tightness, or increasing breathlessness.

The temperature itself does not show how severe the breathing problem is. Pay attention to work of breathing, ability to speak and drink, alertness, and whether prescribed reliever medicine gives the response described in the asthma action plan.

Continue regular asthma medicines unless a clinician has told you otherwise, and follow the illness or flare instructions in your written plan. Rest, drink fluids regularly, and avoid smoke or other known airway irritants. A pharmacist or clinician can advise which fever medicine is suitable for your age, health conditions, and current medicines.

Check symptoms while resting rather than relying only on a thermometer. Note when fever began, accompanying symptoms, inhaler use, and response. Do not start leftover antibiotics: they do not treat viral infections, and an examination may be needed to decide whether a bacterial infection is present.

Get emergency help for severe breathlessness, difficulty speaking, blue or grey lips, confusion, fainting, pronounced drowsiness, chest pulling with each breath, or worsening symptoms that do not respond as expected to prescribed reliever medicine. Follow the emergency steps in the asthma plan while help is arranged.

Seek prompt medical advice when fever persists, returns after improvement, is accompanied by dehydration, or occurs with asthma symptoms that are more frequent than usual. Babies, pregnant people, older adults, and people with weakened immunity or major long-term illness may need earlier assessment.

Ask which action-plan steps apply during infections, how to judge whether the reliever is working, and when you need an examination. Tell the clinician about measured temperatures, fluid intake, mucus, chest discomfort, sick contacts, medicine allergies, and every asthma dose taken. Request an inhaler technique check if delivery feels less effective while you are unwell.
