Joint aspiration when gout is suspected

The procedure draws fluid from an inflamed joint using a sterile needle. It may also reduce pressure, but aspiration alone does not control the urate build-up that drives gout attacks.

Gout commonly presents with sudden joint pain, swelling, warmth, and marked tenderness. Those features can overlap with infection and other crystal arthritis. Laboratory staff can examine aspirated fluid under a microscope for crystals, while additional tests may look for bacteria and inflammatory cells.

Finding urate crystals supports gout, but crystals do not automatically exclude infection in the same joint. The clinician combines fluid findings with temperature, skin changes, illness symptoms, medicines, recent procedures, and examination.

Before aspiration, mention blood thinners, bleeding problems, allergies, recent antibiotics, kidney disease, and any infection or broken skin near the joint. Do not stop prescribed medicine unless the treating clinician tells you to.

Protect the dressing and rest the joint as advised after the sample is taken. Follow the treatment plan for the current inflammation and arrange review of the fluid results. Longer-term gout care may include reviewing urate-lowering treatment, other medicines, kidney health, and personal attack triggers.

Seek urgent assessment for fever, chills, feeling acutely unwell, spreading redness, drainage, rapidly worsening pain, or inability to use the limb. These signs raise concern for infection or another serious joint problem, regardless of a previous gout diagnosis.

After aspiration, urgent review is also appropriate for persistent bleeding, new numbness or weakness, or a hand or foot that becomes pale, blue, or cold. Do not wait for scheduled test results when red-flag symptoms are developing.

Ask whether crystals were seen, whether culture results are pending, and what treatment is safe with your other health conditions. Clarify when to restart normal activity and whether your gout prevention plan needs adjustment after the flare settles.
