What should you know about ASICS gait analysis?

Short answer

An ASICS gait analysis is generally a branded running or footwear assessment, while clinical gait analysis is a broader health evaluation.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

One gait feature cannot diagnose an injury on its own

Direct answer

A retail session may observe your feet and running pattern to guide shoe selection. A physiotherapy or biomechanics assessment can also examine symptoms, joint movement, strength, balance, training load and the way the whole body moves.

What the assessment may show

Observation or video can describe features such as cadence, step width, foot placement and movement at the ankle, knee, hip or trunk. Pressure equipment can map where the foot loads a surface, while motion-capture systems can quantify movement from several viewpoints.

These findings are snapshots under the tested conditions. Speed, fatigue, footwear, the surface and pain can change a person’s gait. A single feature such as inward foot motion does not by itself diagnose an injury or prove which shoe will prevent symptoms.

How to get a useful result

Bring the shoes you normally use, any orthotics, comfortable clothing and a brief account of when symptoms occur. Explain changes in distance, pace, terrain or training. If possible, distinguish pain present during the test from soreness that develops later.

Ask the assessor to connect each recommendation to a finding you can understand. Trial footwear for comfort rather than relying only on a foot category. If exercises, running changes or orthotics are proposed, clarify the goal and how progress will be reassessed.

When a clinical assessment is needed

Arrange evaluation by a clinician when pain alters your walking or running, repeatedly returns, follows an injury, or comes with swelling, weakness, locking or numbness. A shoe-fitting session cannot exclude a fracture, tendon injury, nerve problem or inflammatory condition.

Seek urgent care if you cannot bear weight after trauma, a limb looks deformed, the foot becomes cold or pale, or new severe weakness or loss of sensation develops. Those signs should not wait for a gait appointment.

Questions to ask about the findings

Ask which findings are linked to your symptoms, which are simply normal variation, whether another examination is needed and what change should be tried first. If custom orthotics are discussed, confirm the intended problem, the break-in plan and how fit will be checked.

Questions people ask

Does gait analysis tell me exactly which shoe to buy?

It can inform a shortlist, but fit and comfort still matter. A movement pattern alone cannot guarantee that a particular shoe will prevent pain or injury.

Can gait analysis diagnose the cause of running pain?

It contributes movement information, but diagnosis also depends on your history and physical examination. Imaging or other tests may be considered when the clinical findings support them.
