Ashbourne canine hydrotherapy: what dog owners should know

Water supports body weight while resistance makes muscles work. A suitable programme may use a pool or underwater treadmill, but it should complement veterinary care rather than replace diagnosis, pain management or post-operative instructions.

Buoyancy reduces the load placed through sore limbs, while water resistance can support controlled strengthening. Water depth, temperature, speed, duration and rest all affect the effort required. The therapist observes gait, limb use, breathing and fatigue, then adapts the session to the individual dog.

Canine therapy is distinct from human hydrotherapy. It may be considered during recovery from an orthopedic operation or injury, or as part of longer-term mobility management. Suitability depends on wound healing, heart and breathing health, skin condition, temperament and the veterinarian's restrictions.

Share the veterinary diagnosis, current medicines, recent procedures and activity limits with the canine hydrotherapist. Mention fear of water, seizures, coughing, skin problems, ear disease or any change in mobility. Follow the centre's guidance about feeding, toileting, grooming and what records to bring.

After a session, keep the dog warm and dry, offer water as advised, and allow appropriate rest. Record limping, stiffness, unusual tiredness or behaviour changes so the therapist and veterinarian can adjust the plan. Do not add unsupervised swimming when exercise restrictions are in place.

Stop the activity and seek urgent veterinary advice if the dog struggles to breathe, collapses, becomes unusually weak, develops blue or very pale gums, or cannot use a limb after therapy. These are not expected training effects.

Contact the veterinary team before another session if a wound opens or drains, skin becomes inflamed, coughing develops, pain or limping clearly worsens, or recovery takes longer than the agreed baseline. The next treatment may need modification or postponement.

Ask what functional goal the sessions target, which movements or activities remain restricted, and how progress will be measured. Confirm who will supervise the dog, how the equipment is cleaned, and which post-session changes should be reported immediately.
