Knee Replacement for Arthritis: What to Consider

How the structures involved in Knee Osteoarthritis differ from normal

Short answer

Knee replacement may be considered when arthritis pain and loss of function remain severe despite appropriate non-surgical care, and the decision is based on symptoms, examination and personal goals.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Main indication
Persistent arthritis pain and disability despite suitable non-surgical care
Decision basis
Symptoms, examination, imaging, health and personal priorities
Recovery focus
Safe mobility followed by strength, balance and daily function

Knee replacement in brief

An X-ray showing arthritis does not by itself determine whether surgery is needed. Difficulty walking, climbing stairs, sleeping or completing valued activities helps frame whether the likely benefits justify an operation and rehabilitation.

What the operation changes

During knee replacement, damaged joint surfaces are reshaped and covered with metal and plastic components. Depending on where arthritis is located, a surgeon may discuss replacing part of the knee or the main joint surfaces. The operation aims to reduce arthritic pain and improve useful movement, but the knee does not become identical to a natural, unaffected joint.

Pain around the knee can also arise from the hip, back, tendons or another knee problem. Confirming that arthritis is the main source of limitation helps avoid expecting replacement to solve symptoms from elsewhere.

Building a treatment decision

Before surgery, care may include activity adjustment, strengthening, weight management where relevant, walking support, suitable pain relief and injections. Keep a practical record of which tasks are limited and what treatments have been tried; this gives the consultation more useful detail than a pain score alone.

If proceeding, prepare the home for safe movement, arrange help for early recovery and follow instructions about medicines, skin problems and dental or other infections. Rehabilitation begins with circulation, mobility and knee exercises, then progresses toward strength, balance and everyday tasks. Recovery differs with health, conditioning and the exact procedure.

Warning signs and timely review

Seek an orthopaedic review when knee pain repeatedly restricts walking or sleep, the knee gives way, or non-surgical treatment no longer provides workable control. Sudden inability to bear weight after an injury, a visibly deformed knee, or a cold or numb foot warrants urgent assessment.

After replacement, urgent medical advice is needed for worsening wound drainage, spreading redness, fever, new calf swelling, chest pain or shortness of breath. These signs require assessment rather than waiting for a routine follow-up.

Discussion points before surgery

Ask whether your symptoms match the arthritis seen on imaging, which type of replacement is being proposed and which activities are realistic afterward. Discuss anaesthesia, pain control, blood-clot prevention, wound care, rehabilitation milestones and who to contact if recovery changes unexpectedly.

Questions people ask

Does severe arthritis on an X-ray mean I need knee replacement?

Not necessarily. The decision also depends on pain, functional limits, examination findings, previous treatment, general health and what you want to regain.

Will a replaced knee feel exactly like a natural knee?

A replacement is designed to reduce arthritic pain and support function, but some people remain aware of stiffness, altered sensation or the components during certain activities.

Why is physiotherapy part of recovery?

Guided exercise helps restore knee movement, rebuild supporting muscle and practise safe walking and everyday tasks as healing progresses.
