Armpit wart: identification and care

Because the armpit is moist and exposed to rubbing and shaving, a growth there can become sore or bleed even when it is benign. A clinician can examine uncertain lesions before treatment.

Common warts often have a firm, rough surface and may show tiny dark dots from small blood vessels. In a skin fold, however, friction can change their appearance.

Soft skin tags, inflamed hair follicles and molluscum can resemble a wart. A smooth, dangling bump is more suggestive of a skin tag than a classic wart, but appearance alone may not settle the diagnosis.

Do not cut, burn, tie off or pick the bump. These approaches can cause bleeding, infection and scarring. Avoid shaving directly over it, keep the area dry, and do not share razors or towels.

Wart medicines intended for thicker skin may irritate an armpit fold. Before applying an acid or freezing product, confirm that the growth is a wart and that the product is suitable for this sensitive location.

Book a skin assessment if the diagnosis is uncertain or the growth persists, multiplies, repeatedly catches on clothing, or becomes painful. Prompt review is warranted for rapid change, spontaneous bleeding, an open sore, irregular colour, pus, spreading redness or fever.

People with reduced immunity or poor wound healing should obtain individual advice before attempting removal. Treatment choice depends on the lesion, nearby skin and the risk of irritation in the fold.

Ask what features support a wart rather than a skin tag, whether treatment is necessary, which method suits an armpit, and how to protect the wound from sweat and friction. Also clarify what change should trigger a return visit.
