What should you know about armpit blackheads?

A blackhead, also called an open comedone, forms when oil and dead skin collect in a follicle whose opening remains exposed. Contact with air darkens the plug; the colour is not trapped dirt. Comedonal acne can present with these small, flat or slightly raised plugs. In the armpit, sweat, close-fitting clothing, oily products, friction, and hair removal can encourage blockage or make existing spots more noticeable.

Not every dark underarm mark is a blackhead. A hair trapped beneath the skin may look like a dark dot, while irritation can leave flat brown or grey discoloration after a bump settles. Deep tender lumps, draining areas, or recurring scars do not behave like simple blackheads and deserve clinical assessment.

Wash with a mild, fragrance-free cleanser and pat the fold dry. Choose loose, breathable clothing when friction is a trigger, and pause any deodorant or shaving product that clearly causes irritation. If shaving worsens the bumps, use a clean sharp razor, shaving gel, and light strokes in the direction of hair growth.

Avoid squeezing, scraping, or using needles: pressure in this delicate fold can injure skin and introduce infection. A pharmacist or dermatologist can help select a pore-clearing product suitable for underarm skin. Topical retinoids may prevent new plugs, but they can irritate and need individual guidance, particularly during pregnancy or when trying to conceive. Professional extraction may remove selected plugs, although it does not prevent new ones. Isotretinoin is reserved for acne that warrants specialist treatment rather than an isolated blackhead.

Book a routine appointment if the spots keep returning, spread, scar, or do not improve despite gentle care. A clinician can examine whether the marks are comedones, ingrown hairs, irritation-related pigment, or another follicle problem before recommending treatment.

Seek prompt care for rapidly increasing pain, warmth, swelling, pus, spreading redness, fever, or feeling unwell. Repeated deep lumps, tunnels beneath the skin, drainage, or thick scars also need assessment because these features are not typical of uncomplicated blackheads.

It is also useful to ask how to introduce treatment without excessive irritation, what changes would mean stopping it, and whether professional extraction is appropriate for the visible plugs.
