Armadillo exposure and rabies: what to do

Rabies risk depends on where the contact occurred, the animal's behaviour, whether saliva reached broken skin or a mucous membrane, and local public-health guidance. Do not wait to see whether you feel unwell.

A bite, a scratch contaminated with saliva, or saliva entering the eyes, mouth or an existing wound can require rabies assessment. Touching intact skin or being near an armadillo is different, but uncertain contact should still be described to a clinician.

The animal's appearance cannot reliably rule rabies in or out. Rabies vaccination received before the event changes the preventive regimen, but previously vaccinated people still need prompt advice after a possible exposure.

Wash the bite, scratch or contaminated skin straight away with plenty of soap and running water. Flush exposed eyes or mouth with clean water. Cover a bleeding wound with a clean dressing after washing, and avoid harsh substances that damage tissue.

Contact an emergency department, urgent-care service or public-health authority promptly. Give the country and exact place of exposure, time of contact, wound site, animal behaviour and your rabies vaccination history. A clinician will decide whether rabies post-exposure prophylaxis and other wound care are needed.

Do not catch, handle or kill the armadillo yourself. If it can be located safely, animal-control or public-health professionals can advise what happens next.

Every possible bite or saliva exposure through broken skin deserves same-day professional advice, even if the wound is small or has already healed. Preventive treatment is time-sensitive and is chosen before illness develops.

Call emergency services for severe bleeding, breathing difficulty, collapse, confusion or rapidly worsening illness. Fever, unusual sensations near an old bite, trouble swallowing or agitation after a possible exposure require immediate emergency evaluation.

Ask whether the contact meets the local definition of rabies exposure, which preventive treatment is recommended, and where follow-up doses should be received. Confirm whether tetanus protection, antibiotics or wound review are also needed.
