Arm thread lift: benefits, limitations and safety

Short answer
An arm thread lift places absorbable threads beneath the skin for modest support, but it cannot match surgical removal of substantial excess skin.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Suitable concern
- Mild laxity may be more appropriate than substantial hanging skin.
- What it cannot do
- Threads do not cut away excess skin or directly remove fat.
- Movement matters
- Arm tension and activity influence placement and aftercare.
The short answer
The procedure is sometimes considered for mild laxity in carefully selected patients. Arm skin is exposed to frequent movement and tension, so the clinician must judge whether threads can provide a useful change without creating puckering, visibility or discomfort.
What threads do beneath arm skin
A clinician passes fine threads through the tissue under local anaesthetic. Barbs or cones can hold tissue in a repositioned direction, while healing around the thread may add collagen support. Polydioxanone is one absorbable thread material; the lifting effect and tissue response change as the material breaks down.
Threads do not remove skin or fat. Loose skin after major weight change, pronounced creasing or heavy upper-arm tissue may respond poorly to this approach. Energy-based tightening or surgery may be discussed when the anatomy and desired degree of change call for a different method.
Planning the procedure and recovery
Seek an in-person assessment from a clinician trained in thread placement and arm anatomy. Discuss skin quality, scars, bleeding tendency, autoimmune conditions, infection, allergies and medicines or supplements that affect clotting. The agreed plan should mark insertion paths and explain the expected direction and limits of lift.
After placement, follow instructions for cleansing, dressings and pain relief. Limit vigorous arm exercise, stretching, massage and pressure for the advised recovery period. Temporary bruising, swelling, tenderness or dimpling can occur. Do not pull a visible thread or try to push it beneath the skin yourself.
Signs that need medical review
Contact the treating clinician for increasing redness, warmth, swelling or pain; discharge; fever; an exposed thread; persistent puckering; a new firm lump; or a growing difference between the arms. These changes can indicate infection, thread migration, tissue irritation or an uneven pull.
Seek urgent care if the arm or hand becomes pale, blue, cold, severely painful, weak or numb, or if swelling progresses rapidly. Breathing difficulty, faintness or swelling of the lips or throat requires emergency help. Early assessment matters when circulation, nerve function or a serious allergic reaction may be involved.
Questions to guide your decision
Ask to see outcomes in patients with a similar arm shape and skin quality, and clarify the thread material, placement plane and expected contour change. Find out who manages complications, whether removal is possible if a thread remains troublesome, and how threads compare with HIFU or surgical correction for your goal.

Questions people ask
Are arm thread-lift results permanent?
No. Absorbable thread material breaks down and skin continues to age. The visible effect varies with tissue quality, technique and later changes in weight or skin laxity.
Can threads treat loose skin after major weight loss?
Threads may not control a large amount of excess skin. A clinician should compare the likely modest support with energy-based treatment or surgical skin removal.
Can an exposed arm thread be trimmed at home?
No. Cover the area lightly, avoid pulling the thread and contact the treating clinician, because the site needs assessment for migration and infection.
