What should you know about aquaplast splinting material?

Short answer

Aquaplast is a heat-softened thermoplastic that clinicians mould into a custom splint to support, protect or position a body part.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Material type
Heat-mouldable thermoplastic
Typical purpose
Custom support, protection or positioning
Key precaution
Avoid heat that could distort the splint

Direct answer

It is commonly shaped directly over the hand, wrist, arm or another area after a therapist checks skin condition and the position required. Once cool, the material becomes firm but can often be reheated by a clinician for adjustment.

How the material works

Aquaplast is one type of low-temperature thermoplastic splint material. Warmth makes the sheet flexible enough to contour closely; cooling fixes that contour. Different sheet thicknesses, perforation patterns and stiffness levels allow the clinician to balance support, ventilation and movement control for the intended use.

A custom splint may protect healing tissue, limit a movement that aggravates symptoms or hold a joint in a therapeutic position. It is different from a cast: many splints are removable and can accommodate planned exercises or skin care, but removal should follow the prescribed schedule.

Using and caring for your splint

Wear the splint for the activities and periods specified by your clinician. Fasten straps firmly enough to keep the splint stable without causing tingling, colour change or deep marks. Check the skin after removal, especially around edges and bony areas.

Keep the splint away from hot water, heaters, direct sunlight in a parked car and other heat sources because it may soften and lose its shape. Clean it with cool or lukewarm water and mild soap, then dry it fully before putting it back on. Do not trim, bend or remould it at home; arrange an adjustment if an edge rubs or the fit changes.

When the splint needs review

Remove the splint if your instructions permit and seek prompt clinical advice if it causes increasing pain, persistent numbness, new weakness, marked swelling, blue or unusually pale skin, cold fingers or toes, broken skin, blistering or a rash. These signs may reflect pressure, restricted circulation, nerve irritation or skin sensitivity.

Contact the fitting service if the splint cracks, warps, becomes loose, develops sharp edges or no longer holds the prescribed position. Urgent assessment is appropriate when severe swelling or colour change does not settle after straps are loosened and the limb is positioned as advised.

Questions for your clinician

Ask which movements the splint is intended to limit, when it may be removed, whether exercises should be done out of the splint and how much redness is acceptable after wear. Confirm whom to contact for strap replacement or remoulding, and whether swelling changes are expected during your recovery.

Questions people ask

Can I reshape an Aquaplast splint myself?

No. Home heating can distort the prescribed position or cause a burn. A clinician should assess the fit and remould the material safely when an adjustment is needed.

Can an Aquaplast splint get wet?

The thermoplastic can usually be wiped or gently washed with cool or lukewarm water, but straps and liners may have separate care instructions. Dry every part before wearing it again.

Why does my splint need a follow-up check?

Swelling, healing and changes in movement can alter the fit. A follow-up lets the clinician check pressure areas, joint position, strap tension and whether the splint still meets its purpose.
