Aquaphor for stretch marks: realistic benefits

The ointment sits on the skin surface and reduces water loss. This may make roughness less noticeable and ease tightness from dryness, yet any cosmetic softening is temporary. It does not reach the altered collagen and elastin within a stretch mark.

Stretch marks develop when skin changes rapidly and supportive fibres in the deeper layer are disrupted. They can follow pregnancy, growth, weight change, muscle gain, or corticosteroid exposure. Newer marks may look pink, red, purple, or brown; with time they often become paler and slightly indented.

Moisturising improves the outer barrier but does not reverse that structural change. Aquaphor also has no established role in preventing stretch marks from forming.

Apply a small amount to damp, intact skin and massage gently only if rubbing is comfortable. Use less if clothing or humid weather makes the ointment feel sticky. Stop if a rash, itching, or stinging appears, since sensitive people can react to an ingredient.

If appearance is the concern, a dermatologist can explain options such as microneedling, radiofrequency microneedling, or fractional laser treatment. Results vary with mark colour, age, depth, location, and skin tone, and improvement generally involves softening rather than complete removal.

Book a medical review if broad stretch marks appear without an obvious period of skin stretching, develop while using corticosteroid tablets or creams, or occur with easy bruising, muscle weakness, or other unexplained changes. Get advice for a persistent inflamed or weeping rash where the ointment was applied.

Ask which option fits the colour and maturity of your marks, what degree of change is realistic, how your skin tone affects pigment risk, and what aftercare is required. Mention pregnancy, breastfeeding, a tendency to form raised scars, active skin disease, and all medicines before treatment planning.
