Aquaphor for cracked feet: what to know

Short answer
Aquaphor can soften dry, cracked foot skin by sealing in moisture, but deep, infected, or unexplained cracks need medical assessment.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Can Aquaphor help cracked feet?
This ointment acts mainly as a barrier. It reduces water loss and protects rough skin from friction; it does not close a deep fissure instantly or treat every underlying cause.
Why the skin may be cracking
Heels often split when thick, dry skin is stretched by standing and walking. Open-backed shoes, repeated friction, harsh cleansers, and a dry environment can add to the problem.
Scaling or itch between the toes can accompany athlete's foot, while widespread dryness or repeated fissures may reflect another skin condition. A barrier ointment may ease dryness without addressing fungus or inflammation.
How to use Aquaphor on the feet
Wash gently, pat the feet completely dry, and apply a thin layer to intact or mildly cracked skin. Using it after bathing helps retain water already in the outer skin.
Clean cotton socks can keep the ointment off floors and bedding. Avoid putting ointment between damp toes, where trapped moisture can encourage irritation. Do not cut thick skin or use aggressive scraping on a painful fissure.
When cracked feet need care
Arrange prompt assessment if a crack is deep, bleeding repeatedly, very painful, warm, swollen, draining fluid, or surrounded by spreading redness. Fever with a worsening foot wound needs urgent medical attention.
Seek advice early if you have diabetes, reduced feeling, poor circulation, or immune suppression, because a small foot injury can be harder to notice or heal. Persistent cracks despite gentle care also deserve a diagnosis.
Useful questions at an appointment
Ask whether the pattern suggests simple dryness, eczema, athlete's foot, or another cause; whether a keratolytic moisturiser is appropriate; and how to protect any open fissure. Mention numbness, circulation problems, new footwear, itch, scaling, and every product already applied.

Questions people ask
Can I put Aquaphor on an open heel crack?
A superficial clean crack may benefit from a protective layer, but a deep, gaping, contaminated, or repeatedly bleeding fissure should be assessed before home treatment.
Why are my feet still cracking after moisturising?
Ongoing pressure, very thick skin, footwear friction, fungal infection, eczema, or another health issue can keep cracks active even when the surface feels softer.
