IPL hair removal explained

IPL means intense pulsed light. It delivers a range of light wavelengths rather than the single, more specific wavelength associated with a laser device. Hair grows in cycles, so treated follicles do not all respond at the same visit, and maintenance may be needed.

The device relies on contrast between pigment in the hair and surrounding skin. Hair colour, skin tone, tanning, recent sun exposure, device settings, and operator experience all affect the balance between follicle heating and skin injury. Grey, white, and very light hair contain little target pigment and may respond poorly.

IPL is not interchangeable with Alexandrite, diode, or Nd:YAG laser technology. A trained practitioner should identify the actual device and select settings for the individual's skin and hair rather than using one setting for everyone.

Before treatment, disclose medicines, photosensitivity, scarring history, active rashes, tanning, and previous reactions to light procedures. Follow the clinic's instructions about shaving and avoid waxing or plucking when advised, because the follicle needs a hair target. Eye protection should match the device.

Afterward, handle the area gently, use sun protection, and avoid picking at irritated follicles. Temporary warmth, redness, or small bumps can occur. Follow the provider's product and activity guidance, particularly if the skin remains sensitive.

Contact the treating clinic promptly for blistering, increasing pain, crusting, marked swelling, or a developing change in skin colour. Seek urgent medical care for eye pain or visual changes after light exposure, or for signs of a severe allergic reaction. Do not treat over an active skin infection without clinical guidance.

Ask for the device name, who performs the procedure, how settings are chosen for your skin tone, and whether a test area is appropriate. Clarify expected hair reduction, maintenance, sun precautions, and the plan if blistering or pigment change occurs. If hair growth has changed suddenly, ask whether an underlying cause such as hirsutism should be assessed.
