Antiviral medicine for influenza

These prescription medicines act against influenza viruses; they are not antibiotics and do not treat bacterial infections. A clinician considers when symptoms began, their severity, pregnancy, age, long-term health conditions, and exposure history before recommending one.

Influenza can cause a sudden fever, chills, cough, headache, aching, and marked tiredness. An antiviral limits viral replication, while fluids, rest, and suitable fever or pain relief address comfort and hydration. It does not make a person immediately non-infectious, so staying home while acutely unwell and covering coughs still matter.

Starting promptly is often useful, but later treatment may still be considered for severe illness or for someone more vulnerable to complications. Do not use leftover tablets, share medicine, or stop a prescribed course without checking the instructions. Side effects depend on the specific medicine and may include nausea or vomiting.

Contact a clinic promptly if flu symptoms have just started and you are pregnant, immunocompromised, living with a significant heart or lung condition, or becoming unusually unwell. Tell the clinician when the first symptom appeared, what medicines you take, and whether anyone close to you has confirmed influenza.

If an antiviral is prescribed, follow the dose schedule and ask what to do after a missed dose. Sip fluids regularly and watch urine output as a practical hydration clue. Check before combining cold-and-flu products because different brands can contain the same pain-relieving ingredient.

Seek urgent medical help for difficulty breathing, blue or grey lips, chest pain, confusion, fainting, a seizure, severe weakness, or inability to keep fluids down. A child who is hard to wake, struggling to breathe, or showing signs of dehydration also needs urgent assessment.

Arrange reassessment if symptoms improve and then return with worsening fever or cough, or if a long-term condition becomes harder to control. Influenza can present with pneumonia, and new breathlessness or chest pain should not be managed only with home remedies.

Ask whether your health history makes antiviral treatment appropriate, how soon to begin, which side effects warrant a call, and whether the medicine interacts with your regular prescriptions. You can also ask when it is reasonable to return to work, school, exercise, or close contact with vulnerable relatives.
