Antibiotics for a bladder infection

A clinician may base the choice on pregnancy, sex, kidney function, allergies, previous urine results, recent antibiotics and whether the infection seems limited to the bladder. A urine test may be useful when the diagnosis is uncertain or infection is recurrent.

A bladder infection can present with burning during urination, frequent or urgent urination, cloudy urine and discomfort low in the abdomen. Fever, chills, vomiting or pain in the side or back can occur when a urinary infection involves the kidneys and should prompt faster assessment.

Similar urinary symptoms can arise from vaginal irritation, sexually transmitted infection, stones or prostate inflammation. Discharge, genital sores, difficulty passing urine or pelvic pain gives the clinician additional clues and may change the tests and treatment.

Take the antibiotic at the labelled times and complete the prescribed course unless your clinician tells you otherwise. Check food instructions and possible interactions, and seek guidance after a missed dose instead of taking two together without advice.

Drink enough to avoid dehydration, but do not force excessive fluid. Rest and use only pain relief suitable for your medical history. Contact the clinic if symptoms worsen, return soon after treatment, or do not improve within the timeframe you were given.

Seek same-day medical assessment for fever, shaking chills, side or back pain, vomiting, pregnancy, visible blood in urine, inability to pass urine, or marked worsening. These features can require different testing or treatment from a straightforward bladder infection.

Call emergency services for confusion, extreme drowsiness, collapse, severe breathing difficulty, mottled or unusually pale skin, or very little urine with severe illness. These are warning signs of possible sepsis or significant dehydration, regardless of how the urinary symptoms began.

Ask whether a urine culture is needed, when results will be available, and whether they could change the medicine. Confirm the expected improvement window, side effects that require help, and what evaluation is appropriate if infections keep returning.
