Getting antibiotic pills over the counter

A clinician or authorised pharmacist should establish whether bacteria are a likely cause and whether an antibiotic is appropriate. Colds, influenza, most sore throats, and fungal infections do not improve simply because an antibiotic is taken.

Similar pain, discharge, fever, or urinary symptoms can come from different conditions. Antibiotics target particular groups of bacteria, and the choice may change with the body site, severity, pregnancy, allergies, kidney function, other medicines, or previous test results.

Unnecessary treatment can cause diarrhoea, nausea, allergic reactions, vaginal thrush, and interactions. It also encourages bacteria to become less responsive to antibiotics, which can make a later infection harder to treat.

Ask a licensed healthcare professional to assess the symptoms. Explain where they started, how they have changed, and whether there is fever, pregnancy, medicine allergy, immune suppression, or recent antibiotic use. A urine sample, swab, examination, or other test may be needed before treatment.

If an antibiotic is supplied, follow the label and the prescriber's instructions, check how it fits with your regular medicines, and never share it. Do not use tablets saved from an earlier illness because the drug, dose, and intended course may not fit the current problem.

Get urgent medical help for trouble breathing, swelling of the face or tongue, a rapidly spreading rash, collapse, confusion, severe weakness, or suspected severe allergy. Fever with worsening pain, repeated vomiting, breathlessness, a stiff neck, or inability to keep fluids down also needs prompt assessment.

During pregnancy, seek timely advice for fever, urinary pain, abdominal pain, bleeding, or unusual discharge. If symptoms worsen after starting treatment or do not improve within the timeframe given by the prescriber, arrange reassessment rather than switching medicines yourself.

Ask what diagnosis the antibiotic is intended to treat, whether testing would change the choice, which side effects need action, and which medicines or supplements may interact. Confirm what to do after a missed dose and when to return if the symptoms persist.
