Antibiotic medicine for a cold and cough

Mucus becoming yellow or green does not on its own show that an antibiotic is needed. The overall pattern, examination and risk factors guide that decision.

A common cold and acute bronchitis often cause cough through viral airway irritation. Antibiotics cannot clear those viruses. Cough can also accompany asthma, allergic rhinitis, acid reflux, bronchiolitis, bronchiectasis or another condition, each requiring a different approach.

A clinician considers breathing effort, chest findings, fever pattern, duration, age, existing lung disease and general condition. Antibiotics may be appropriate when that assessment identifies or strongly suspects a bacterial infection, but they are not a general cough medicine.

Rest, drink enough fluid and avoid smoke or vaping. Warm drinks may soothe an irritated throat. A pharmacist can help select symptom relief that fits your age, pregnancy status, medical conditions and other medicines; combination cold products can duplicate ingredients.

Arrange a medical review if the cough is worsening, repeatedly returns, lasts longer than expected, or occurs with wheeze, persistent fever or an underlying lung condition. Do not share antibiotics or save unfinished tablets for another illness.

Seek emergency help for severe difficulty breathing, blue or grey lips, confusion, collapse, severe chest pain, or coughing up more than small streaks of blood. Prompt assessment is also warranted for dehydration, unusual drowsiness, rapidly worsening illness, or a child who is struggling to feed or breathe. Urgency comes from these warning signs, not from mucus colour.

Ask what diagnosis is causing the cough, what findings suggest bacteria rather than a virus, how long symptoms may continue, and which change should prompt another examination. If antibiotics are prescribed, confirm dosing instructions, interactions, allergy precautions and what to do after a missed dose.
