Anti-vomiting medicines during pregnancy

A clinician may first suggest vitamin B6, sometimes combined with doxylamine, or choose another anti-sickness medicine when symptoms continue. Do not start, stop, combine, or change the dose of a medicine without checking with a doctor, pharmacist, or maternity clinician who knows you are pregnant.

The appropriate option depends on how often you vomit, whether you can keep fluids down, and whether dehydration or weight loss is developing. The clinician also considers allergies, heart rhythm problems, liver or kidney conditions, and medicines or supplements you already take.

Different anti-vomiting medicines can cause effects such as sleepiness, dizziness, constipation, headache, or restlessness. Read the dispensing label carefully and avoid driving if the medicine makes you drowsy. Herbal or over-the-counter products still need a pregnancy-specific check because their ingredients may overlap with prescribed treatment.

Contact your maternity team or primary-care clinician if nausea or vomiting is interfering with drinking, eating, sleep, or daily activity. Tell them when symptoms began, how often they occur, what you can keep down, and every medicine, vitamin, supplement, or herbal product you use.

While arranging advice, take frequent small sips of fluid and try small, plain meals if tolerated. Taking prescribed medicine at the recommended time may prevent symptoms from building; follow the label rather than waiting until vomiting is severe. If you vomit soon after a dose, seek advice before repeating it because the amount absorbed is uncertain.

Seek urgent medical assessment if you cannot keep fluids down, pass very little or dark urine, feel faint or confused, vomit blood, develop severe abdominal pain, have a high fever with a stiff neck or severe headache, or notice vaginal bleeding. These signs may indicate dehydration or another problem needing prompt treatment.

Get immediate help for trouble breathing, swelling of the lips or tongue, widespread hives, collapse, or marked palpitations after taking a medicine. Bring the medicine packet or a photo of its label so the treating team can identify the product and dose.

Ask which medicine fits your pregnancy stage, how and when to take it, which side effects should prompt a call, and whether it interacts with prenatal vitamins or other treatments. Also ask what to do if you miss a dose, vomit after taking it, or remain unable to drink despite treatment.
