Anti-itch relief for a yeast infection

Check with a pharmacist or clinician before applying a product to vulval skin, and do not put ordinary skin creams inside the vagina. A product that masks itching can delay assessment when the cause is not thrush.

Vaginal thrush can present with itching, soreness and a thick discharge, but irritation, skin conditions and other infections can cause overlapping symptoms. A first episode, an uncertain diagnosis or symptoms that differ from previous confirmed thrush deserve assessment rather than repeated self-treatment.

Use the antifungal exactly as directed and complete its course. Wash gently with water or an unperfumed emollient, pat dry, choose loose breathable underwear and avoid scented washes, deodorants and douching. A cool compress over clothing may calm external itching. Pregnancy, breastfeeding, regular medicines or repeated episodes should be mentioned before selecting treatment.

Seek prompt care for fever, pelvic or lower abdominal pain, sores, marked swelling, bleeding, foul-smelling discharge or feeling acutely unwell. Arrange a routine review if treatment does not help, symptoms return, urination is painful, or discharge has a new colour or odour. These features can point to another cause that needs examination or testing.

Ask whether your symptoms fit thrush, whether a swab is appropriate, which antifungal formulation suits you, and which external soothing products are safe for vulval skin. Also discuss any medicine allergies, pregnancy possibility, diabetes or immune-system condition that could affect management.
