What should you know about anti hepatitis A IgG positive?

Anti-hepatitis A IgG remains as an immune response after the body has encountered hepatitis A virus or after vaccination. This result does not identify the timing of exposure and does not distinguish those two explanations on its own. It is also not the same as a positive IgM result, which may support consideration of a recent infection.

If you feel well, the finding is often reassuring, but your clinician may still review your vaccination history and the reason the test was ordered. If you have feeling generally unwell, nausea, loss of appetite, dark urine, or yellowing of the eyes, symptoms and liver blood tests matter more than the IgG result alone.

Keep a copy of the report and share your vaccination history, recent travel, possible contact with illness, and any medicines with your clinician. Ask whether additional tests, such as IgM or a Liver Function Test, are appropriate. A positive result does not automatically call for treatment or an extra vaccine dose.

Contact a clinician promptly for jaundice, dark urine, repeated vomiting, increasing abdominal pain, or difficulty drinking enough fluid. Seek urgent care for confusion, extreme drowsiness, fainting, or rapid deterioration. These symptoms require assessment even when anti-hepatitis A IgG is positive.

Ask whether your result is best explained by Hepatitis A Vaccination or past illness, whether IgM testing is needed, and whether your liver tests are normal. If you have symptoms, ask how to reduce spread while the cause is being clarified.
