Anti-gravity running treadmill: a patient guide

Short answer
An anti-gravity running treadmill supports part of your body weight so you can practise walking or running with less load through the legs.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Main function
- Reduces lower-limb loading during treadmill walking or running
- Adjustable features
- Body-weight support, belt speed and session duration
- Clinical role
- A supervised tool within a broader rehabilitation plan
The practical answer
It can help bridge the gap between basic exercises and full-weight-bearing movement. The machine does not remove all stress or replace rehabilitation; speed, support and session length still need to match your condition and recovery stage.
How the treadmill changes loading
The user wears fitted shorts that zip into an enclosed chamber around the treadmill. Air pressure within that chamber gently lifts the lower body, reducing how much body weight passes through the feet while the belt moves normally beneath them.
A therapist can adjust the support as well as pace and duration. This allows observation of stride, comfort and fatigue under controlled conditions, then a gradual move toward carrying more body weight when the person is ready.
Preparing for and using a session
Wear suitable exercise clothing and secure footwear, and tell the therapist about current pain, swelling, wounds, dizziness or new medical restrictions before starting. Follow the fitting instructions carefully so the chamber seals without uncomfortable pressure.
During the session, use a natural stride rather than chasing speed. Report pain that rises, limping, light-headedness or unusual pressure. The therapist may change support or stop the activity, then compare your response during the session with how the limb feels afterwards.
When symptoms need attention
Stop and alert the supervising clinician if you develop sharp pain, increasing swelling, a new change in walking control, dizziness, chest discomfort or unusual shortness of breath. Do not increase speed or reduce support to prove that you can tolerate it.
Outside the clinic, seek urgent medical care for chest pain, severe breathing difficulty, fainting, a suddenly cold or pale limb, or new marked weakness or numbness. For a less dramatic but lasting flare after treatment, contact the rehabilitation team before the next session.
Questions for the rehabilitation team
Ask what the treadmill is intended to improve in your programme, how support will be progressed, and which symptoms mean the session should stop. It is also useful to clarify how treadmill work fits with strength, balance and overground walking, especially during post-operative rehabilitation.

Questions people ask
Does an anti-gravity treadmill create zero gravity?
No. It uses air pressure to reduce the load you carry while remaining on a treadmill; your feet still contact the moving belt and your legs continue to work.
Can I use it immediately after an operation?
Timing depends on the operation, wound status, weight-bearing instructions and your clinician's assessment. Surgical restrictions still apply even when the machine provides support.
Is it only for runners?
No. It may also be used to practise walking, improve gait control or progress lower-limb loading within an individual rehabilitation programme.
