Anti-dandruff hair care that protects the scalp

Hair type still matters: the scalp may need treatment while curly, coloured, or chemically processed lengths need conditioning and less manipulation.

Dandruff involves shedding scale from the scalp and often comes with itch. Infrequent cleansing can allow oil, scale, and styling residue to accumulate, while aggressive washing can irritate the skin barrier. Neither visible flakes nor itch alone identifies the exact cause.

Conditioner, masks, and oils mainly support the hair shaft. When heavy formulas are placed directly on a dandruff-prone scalp, residue may make scale harder to clear or aggravate sensitivity in some people.

Part the hair so medicated shampoo reaches the scalp, massage gently with finger pads, keep it on for the label-directed contact time, and rinse well. Put conditioner on the mid-lengths and ends unless its instructions say it is suitable for scalp use.

Clean combs, brushes, head coverings, and pillowcases regularly to reduce product buildup. Limit tight styles when the scalp is sore, and reduce fragranced sprays or dry shampoo if they increase itching. Introduce one new product at a time so a reaction is easier to identify.

Get medical advice for persistent symptoms despite correct product use, or for marked redness, tenderness, swelling, pus, weeping, or crusting. Sudden or patchy hair loss, broken hairs, and thick, sharply defined scale need an examination rather than repeated product changes.

Urgent care is appropriate if a product reaction causes facial swelling, breathing difficulty, or a rapidly spreading blistering rash. Rinse away the product and do not reapply it.
