Anterior cervical corpectomy and fusion explained

The operation approaches the cervical spine through the front of the neck. It may be considered when compression extends behind a vertebral body and cannot be adequately addressed by removing a disc alone.

The surgeon gently moves the throat structures aside, removes the affected disc material and part or all of a vertebral body, and clears pressure from neural tissue. The resulting space is bridged with a cage or structural graft containing bone material.

A plate and screws may hold the reconstructed segment while bone joins across it. This fusion intentionally stops movement at the treated level. The planned extent depends on the location of spinal cord or nerve compression, alignment, bone quality, and previous operations.

Before admission, provide a complete medicine list and disclose smoking, swallowing problems, voice changes, allergies, and previous neck surgery. Follow the team's instructions for fasting and medicine adjustments. Arrange practical support for the first part of recovery.

After discharge, protect the incision, use any prescribed collar as directed, and increase walking gradually. Restrictions on lifting, driving, work, and neck movement vary with the reconstruction. Attend follow-up so wound healing, neurological function, implant position, and developing fusion can be assessed.

Call emergency services for difficulty breathing, rapidly increasing neck swelling, or an inability to swallow saliva. New or worsening arm or leg weakness, loss of bladder or bowel control, or severe problems with balance also require emergency assessment.

Contact the surgical team promptly for fever, spreading wound redness, drainage, worsening pain, persistent vomiting, or swallowing difficulty that is not settling. Mild throat discomfort or temporary hoarseness can occur after an anterior approach, but deterioration should be reported.

Ask which vertebral level will be removed, what is compressing the spinal cord or nerves, and why corpectomy is preferred over a smaller decompression. Discuss the proposed cage or graft, fixation, collar plan, expected activity limits, and symptoms that may improve slowly or remain despite adequate decompression.
