Chills, painful joints, sore muscles, poor appetite and swollen glands can occur. Bleeding may show as new bruises, tiny red skin spots, a nosebleed or bleeding gums. Not everyone has every feature, and the same complaints occur in several viral and bacterial illnesses.

Dengue is caused by a virus carried by certain mosquitoes. A clinician asks where you have recently lived or travelled, when each symptom began, whether mosquito bites were likely, and whether bleeding or dehydration has appeared. Examination and blood testing help distinguish it from other causes of fever.

The illness can change around the time the temperature returns toward normal. At that point, worsening abdominal pain, ongoing vomiting, bleeding, irritability, drowsiness or breathing difficulty may reflect a more serious phase. Feeling cooler is therefore not a reason to ignore new symptoms.

Arrange a medical review when dengue could explain a fever, particularly after time in a place where transmission occurs. Encourage rest and regular small drinks; oral rehydration fluid can replace water and salts lost through fever or vomiting. Notice urine frequency, alertness, breathing and whether fluids stay down.

If pain or fever medicine is needed, ask whether paracetamol is suitable and follow its dosing instructions. Do not take aspirin, ibuprofen or related anti-inflammatory medicines while dengue is suspected unless a clinician specifically approves them, as they can worsen bleeding. Use repellent, window screens, covering clothing or a mosquito net to prevent further bites during the illness.

Seek emergency care for strong or increasing abdominal pain, vomiting that continues, blood in vomit, black bowel movements, significant bleeding, fainting, confusion, cold clammy skin, pronounced weakness, rapid or difficult breathing, or a major reduction in urination. Inability to drink or retain fluids also needs urgent attention.

Watch carefully as the fever resolves, when warning signs can begin. Obtain earlier advice for a child, a pregnant person, an older adult, or someone living with a significant health condition because dehydration and circulation changes may be harder for them to tolerate.

Tell the clinician your travel dates, symptom timeline, medicines taken and any bleeding or reduced urination. Ask which test fits the stage of illness, how much and what type of fluid to drink, whether repeat blood tests are planned, and exactly where to seek help if the fever falls but other symptoms intensify.
