What should you know about ano ang ectopic pregnancy?

The words “ano ang” mean “what is” in Filipino. An ectopic pregnancy cannot develop normally and can cause dangerous internal bleeding if the tube ruptures, so suspected symptoms require timely medical assessment.

An ectopic pregnancy may present with one-sided lower abdominal or pelvic pain, vaginal bleeding or brown discharge, shoulder-tip pain, discomfort when passing urine or stool, dizziness, or fainting. Some people initially have few symptoms, and these symptoms can also have other causes.

Previous ectopic pregnancy, fallopian-tube surgery, pelvic inflammatory disease, and some fertility treatments can increase risk, but an ectopic pregnancy can occur without a recognised risk factor. Symptoms and risk history cannot establish the location of a pregnancy by themselves.

If you could be pregnant and have pelvic pain or bleeding, contact a maternity service, early-pregnancy unit, or emergency service promptly. Assessment may include a pregnancy test, blood tests that track pregnancy hormone levels, and a transvaginal ultrasound to look for the pregnancy's location.

Management depends on symptoms, scan and blood-test findings, pregnancy size and location, and overall stability. Options can include close monitoring, medicine that stops pregnancy tissue growing, or surgery. A salpingectomy removes the affected fallopian tube and may be needed when rupture has occurred or surgery is otherwise the safest approach.

Call emergency services or go to an emergency department now if possible pregnancy is accompanied by sudden or severe abdominal pain, shoulder-tip pain, fainting, pronounced dizziness, weakness, paleness, confusion, difficulty breathing, or heavy bleeding. These can signal internal bleeding or rupture. Do not drive yourself if you feel faint or severely unwell.
