Upper-lip angioedema: action and warning signs

The lip may feel tight, heavy, tingling, or tender. Angioedema can stay limited to the lip, occur with hives, or extend into the mouth and throat, so watch the pattern rather than judging only the visible size.

Angioedema develops when fluid moves into deeper tissue. Food, a medicine, a sting, or another exposure may trigger an episode, although the cause is not always apparent. Lip trauma, a dental problem, and infection can also produce swelling and need different management.

Note whether the change began abruptly, whether it is itchy, and whether there are raised welts elsewhere. One-sided pain, warmth, pus, a toothache, or fever deserves clinical assessment because those features are less typical of a simple allergic-type episode.

Move away from a suspected contact exposure and avoid foods or non-essential products that clearly preceded the reaction. Follow an existing allergy emergency plan and use prescribed rescue treatment exactly as instructed. Do not rely on an oral antihistamine to manage throat or breathing symptoms.

Arrange medical advice for a new episode even if it begins settling. Prepare the names and timing of medicines, recent dental work, foods, and stings. A time-stamped photo can show progression that may no longer be visible during the appointment.

Contact emergency services if the tongue or throat swells, the voice becomes hoarse, saliva is hard to swallow, breathing becomes difficult, or dizziness and collapse occur. Sit upright if that makes breathing easier and do not eat or drink while swallowing is impaired.

Get urgent medical assessment when the swelling is rapidly spreading, follows a known serious allergen exposure, or is accompanied by repeated vomiting or widespread hives. Painful swelling with fever or dental symptoms also needs timely care, even without airway signs.

Discuss which suspected triggers should be avoided, whether allergy assessment is suitable, and which symptoms should activate an emergency plan. Ask if any current medicine is associated with angioedema and how changes should be made safely under supervision.
