Angioedema of the lips: what to know

Short answer
Angioedema of the lips is deeper swelling that needs urgent attention if breathing, swallowing, or the tongue is affected.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What should you know about angioedema lips?
The swelling may affect one or both lips and can feel tight, tender, warm, or tingly. Hives or itching may occur alongside it, although angioedema can also appear without either symptom.
What lip angioedema means
Angioedema develops below the skin surface as fluid enters deeper tissue. Possible triggers include foods, medicines, insect stings, infections, or contact exposures. Some episodes have no obvious trigger, and recurrent swelling without hives can follow a different pathway from an allergic reaction.
Location alone does not reveal the cause. A clinician may use the timing, accompanying hives, family history, and recent exposures to distinguish angioedema from infection, injury, or a local dental problem.
What to do during an episode
Stop using a suspected new cosmetic or food, but do not stop a prescribed medicine unless a clinician advises it. Note when swelling began, what you ate or took beforehand, and whether hives, itching, pain, or abdominal symptoms appeared. A cool compress may ease local discomfort.
Follow an existing allergy action plan and use prescribed emergency medicine exactly as directed. Antihistamines may be used for some histamine-related episodes, but treatment depends on the cause and should not delay emergency help when airway symptoms occur.
When to seek urgent care
Call emergency services now for trouble breathing, noisy breathing, throat tightness, a swollen tongue, difficulty swallowing, faintness, confusion, or rapidly increasing facial swelling. Do not drive yourself if breathing or consciousness is affected.
Arrange prompt medical assessment for a first episode, swelling after a medicine, repeated attacks, severe abdominal pain, fever, spreading redness, or dental pain. These details can change both the diagnosis and the treatment approach.
Questions for your clinician
Ask whether your pattern suggests a histamine-related reaction, a medicine effect, or another form of angioedema; which medicines or products to avoid; whether you need an emergency plan; and what information to record if swelling returns.

Questions people ask
Can lip angioedema happen without hives?
Yes. Hives and itching can accompany some forms, while other forms cause deeper swelling without a surface rash.
Should I photograph the swelling?
A clear photograph can help a clinician assess an episode that has improved before your appointment. Also record the timing and possible exposures.
Can I wait if only my lip is swollen?
Monitor closely only if breathing and swallowing are normal and the swelling is not progressing. A first, unexplained, medicine-related, or worsening episode deserves prompt medical advice.
