Viral angina: what the term means

The phrase is used in some countries and translations rather than as a single precise diagnosis. Symptoms may include throat pain, painful swallowing, a hoarse voice, cough, a runny nose or fever, depending on the virus involved.

In this phrase, angina is an older use of the word for painful inflammation in the throat. Cardiac angina is chest discomfort caused by inadequate blood flow to heart muscle. A respiratory virus can also cause other problems, so the location and pattern of symptoms still need attention.
