Anaphylaxis explained in plain language

How the structures involved in Anaphylaxis differ from normal

Short answer

Anaphylaxis is a rapidly developing, severe allergic reaction that can interfere with breathing or blood circulation and needs emergency treatment.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Definition
A severe allergic reaction affecting critical body functions
Key danger
Airway narrowing, swelling, or reduced circulation
Priority
Adrenaline first, followed by emergency assessment

What happens in the body

During anaphylaxis, immune chemicals act in several places at once. The throat or tongue may swell, muscles around the airways may tighten, and fluid may move out of blood vessels. These changes can cause noisy breathing, wheezing, a weak pulse, dizziness, or collapse. Hives, flushing, abdominal pain, or vomiting may occur alongside them.

A mild local allergy is different: it remains limited, such as itching at one small contact area, without airway or circulation problems. Because a reaction can change quickly, the appearance of breathing difficulty, throat symptoms, or faintness calls for emergency action rather than waiting to see whether it settles.

Take immediate action

Give prescribed adrenaline promptly into the outer thigh using the auto-injector instructions, and call local emergency services. Position the person safely: lying flat is preferred when tolerated, while someone struggling to breathe may need to sit with support. Do not allow sudden standing, and do not leave the person alone.

Bring any remaining auto-injectors and the used device for the medical team. Food, drink, or oral medicine should not delay adrenaline. Once the emergency has passed, arrange allergy assessment to examine likely triggers and create a practical avoidance and response plan.

Recognise an emergency

Emergency signs include swelling that affects the mouth or throat, difficulty swallowing, hoarseness, persistent coughing, wheezing, laboured breathing, confusion, faintness, or collapse. These signs matter whether or not hives are visible. If there is doubt and anaphylaxis is suspected, follow the prescribed emergency plan and seek urgent medical help. Improvement after treatment does not remove the need for assessment.

Plan for next time

Ask your clinician to demonstrate the exact auto-injector you carry and explain when another dose may be needed. Clarify the suspected allergen, useful tests, label-reading precautions, and whether you need a medical identification item. Your plan should also address storage during hot weather and access during travel or exercise.

Questions people ask

Is anaphylaxis the same as any allergic reaction?

No. Allergic reactions range from limited symptoms to anaphylaxis. Anaphylaxis is severe because it threatens breathing or circulation, or causes rapidly progressing symptoms across the body.

Do antihistamines stop anaphylaxis?

Antihistamines can ease some skin symptoms, but they do not treat dangerous airway swelling or low circulation. They must not delay prescribed adrenaline and emergency help.

Why is medical care needed after the person improves?

Clinicians may need to monitor breathing and circulation, provide further treatment, and watch for symptoms returning after the initial response.
