What should you know about anaphylactoid shock?

A sudden fall in blood pressure may occur alongside breathing difficulty, swelling, widespread hives, vomiting, dizziness or collapse. Treatment should not wait for the trigger or immune mechanism to be confirmed.

Clinicians once used “anaphylactoid” for reactions that looked like anaphylaxis but were not thought to involve the classic allergic antibody pathway. Current practice generally describes both as anaphylaxis because the outward reaction and urgent treatment are the same.

Shock means the circulation is failing to deliver enough blood to vital organs. A person may become pale, clammy, confused, faint or unresponsive. Skin signs can be absent, so lack of a rash does not rule out a severe reaction.

Ask what exposure is suspected, which substances should be avoided while the cause is assessed, whether you need to carry adrenaline, how to recognise a recurrence and whether relatives or colleagues should learn to use your device. Bring the emergency record and a list of medicines, foods, supplements and procedures preceding the reaction.
