AMS Surgical Sutures: What Patients Should Know

The clinician selects the strand type, thickness, and stitching technique after examining the injury or surgical incision. The name printed on a suture packet matters less to a patient than whether its properties suit the tissue being repaired.

Absorbable sutures gradually lose strength and are broken down by the body, so they commonly do not require removal. Non-absorbable sutures retain their structure and may need removal when placed in the skin, although some remain inside the body for long-term support.

A monofilament is a single smooth strand that passes through tissue with relatively little drag. A braided suture contains intertwined fibres, making it flexible and easy to handle but giving fluid and debris more surface to collect on. These features help the clinician match the material to the tissue and contamination risk.

Follow the dressing and washing instructions given after the procedure because they reflect the wound's location and closure method. Keep the area protected from friction, avoid pulling at knots or exposed thread, and do not remove stitches yourself. If a dressing becomes soaked, dirty, or loose, replace it as instructed or contact the treating clinic for guidance.

Attend any planned wound check or removal appointment. Removal timing varies by body area and healing progress; leaving removable skin sutures in too long can make them harder to take out, while early removal can allow the wound edges to separate.

Contact a healthcare professional promptly if redness is spreading, swelling or pain is worsening, pus or a bad smell appears, fever develops, the wound edges open, or a stitch breaks before healing is established. These changes can indicate infection or loss of wound support and need an examination.

Seek urgent care for bleeding that does not settle with firm direct pressure, loss of feeling or movement beyond the wound, pale or blue skin, or a rapidly worsening reaction with facial swelling or breathing difficulty. Do not delay urgent assessment to wait for a routine appointment.

Ask whether your stitches are absorbable, whether any need removal, when the wound may get wet, which activities could strain the closure, and what dressing is appropriate. Also confirm whom to contact if a knot loosens or the wound changes outside clinic hours.
