A miscarriage can also occur for reasons unrelated to the procedure. This makes it difficult to know whether a loss following amniocentesis was caused by the sampling itself.

Your clinician considers the stage of pregnancy, ultrasound findings, whether there are pregnancy complications, the route available for the needle, and the experience of the procedure team. General risk figures may not describe your circumstances accurately.

The procedure is performed under continuous ultrasound guidance so the clinician can choose a path away from the baby. The decision weighs the chance of a complication against the value of obtaining diagnostic information that screening cannot provide.

Before consenting, ask your fetal medicine team for the risk estimate they use in their own service and how your medical or pregnancy history changes it. Discuss what the result could add, what alternatives are available, and whether waiting or declining the procedure is reasonable for you.

Afterward, follow the clinic's advice about activity, travel, medicines, and whom to contact. Mild brief cramping can occur, but new or increasing symptoms should not be dismissed simply because they began after a procedure.

Call your maternity unit promptly for vaginal bleeding, fluid leaking from the vagina, persistent or worsening cramps, regular contractions, fever, chills, or feeling significantly unwell. Seek urgent care for heavy bleeding, severe pain, fainting, breathing difficulty, or any rapidly worsening symptom.

Ask how the team estimates procedure-related risk, who will perform the sampling, whether your ultrasound changes the plan, what symptoms the unit wants reported, and how quickly you could be assessed if a concern develops.
