Using AmLactin for Acanthosis Nigricans

Acanthosis nigricans causes skin in body folds to become darker, thicker and velvety. It commonly appears on the neck, underarms or groin and may accompany insulin resistance, hormonal conditions, certain medicines or other health issues. A lactic-acid moisturiser works at the skin surface, helping soften built-up cells; it cannot determine or correct the reason the change developed.

Darkening may persist even when texture improves. Trying to bleach or aggressively peel the area can cause inflammation, which may deepen uneven colour, especially in richly pigmented skin.

Arrange a medical review if acanthosis nigricans has not been assessed. For topical care, test AmLactin on a small patch and introduce a thin layer gradually to unbroken skin. Do not place it on mucosal surfaces, irritated creases or skin just shaved or waxed. Reduce use or stop if persistent stinging, redness or scaling appears.

Keep the fold dry and minimise friction from tight clothing. Avoid layering lactic acid with retinoids, strong exfoliants or fragranced products unless a dermatologist has designed that combination.

Seek timely medical assessment if dark velvety thickening appears suddenly, spreads quickly, involves the mouth, or occurs with unexplained weight loss or feeling unwell. Also obtain care for cracked, painful, oozing or foul-smelling folds, as infection or another inflammatory condition may be present.
