A recommendation is therefore a starting framework rather than a prescription for everyone.

Asthma often presents with variable wheezing, cough, chest tightness, or breathlessness. Allergic rhinitis more often involves sneezing, an itchy or blocked nose, and watery discharge. These problems can occur together, while a chronic cough can also have non-allergic causes that need separate assessment.

Record when symptoms start, what you were doing, suspected exposures, nighttime waking, and which medicine helped. Bring inhalers, nasal sprays, and a current medication list to the appointment. A short video or audio recording may help if noisy breathing is intermittent and absent during the visit.

Do not stop prescribed asthma control medicine or begin an elimination diet solely because of general online material. Ask whether lung function testing, allergy assessment, inhaler-technique review, or a written action plan fits your symptoms. Trigger reduction should be practical and linked to a plausible exposure.

Call emergency services for severe breathing difficulty, blue or grey lips, collapse, confusion, rapidly increasing swelling of the tongue or throat, or an inability to speak comfortably because of breathlessness. Use prescribed emergency medicine according to the patient's action plan while help is arranged.

Seek same-day assessment when wheezing or chest tightness is worsening, reliever medicine is helping less than expected, breathing interrupts sleep repeatedly, or a child is working hard to breathe. Urgency follows the breathing difficulty itself, not whether allergy or asthma seems common.

Ask what diagnoses fit the pattern, which tests would change management, and how each medicine should be used. Request a demonstration of inhaler technique and clear instructions for worsening symptoms. If allergy is suspected, ask which exposure is being evaluated and how the result would affect treatment.
