Telogen effluvium: diffuse shedding explained

Short answer
Telogen effluvium is a form of diffuse hair shedding that often follows a physical, emotional, nutritional or hormonal stress on the body.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Typical pattern
- Diffuse shedding across the scalp
- Timing
- Shedding may appear months after a trigger
- Scalp appearance
- Usually normal rather than inflamed or scarred
The short answer
The trigger shifts more follicles than usual into a resting phase, so increased shedding becomes noticeable later rather than at the moment of the event. The scalp generally looks normal, and loss is spread across it instead of forming sharply defined bald patches.
How the shedding pattern develops
People with telogen effluvium commonly notice extra hairs during washing, brushing or on a pillow, together with reduced overall volume or a wider-looking part. Possible triggers include a significant illness, high fever, surgery, childbirth, major psychological strain, rapid dietary restriction, iron deficiency, thyroid disturbance or a medicine change. Sometimes more than one factor is present.
Shedding often begins a few months after the trigger because resting hairs remain in the scalp before releasing. Recovery also takes time: once the driver settles, new growth must emerge and gain length before density looks improved. Telogen effluvium may occur alongside pattern hair loss, which can make thinning more apparent.
Steps that support assessment and recovery
Make a timeline of illnesses, operations, childbirth, major stress, restrictive eating and medication or supplement changes from the months before shedding started. Bring that timeline to a primary-care clinician or dermatologist. Examination can assess the distribution of loss and look for inflammation, breakage or features of another alopecia; selected blood tests may be used when symptoms suggest iron, thyroid or nutritional problems.
Eat a varied diet with adequate protein and handle hair gently while shedding continues. Avoid tight styles, aggressive brushing and repeated high-heat or chemical processing. Do not start high-dose supplements simply because hair is falling: excess nutrients can cause harm, and treatment should address a confirmed deficiency or other identified trigger.
When hair loss needs medical attention
Arrange an assessment if shedding is heavy, persists without improvement, or occurs with fatigue, unexplained weight change, menstrual changes, dietary restriction or symptoms of anaemia or thyroid disease. A review is also appropriate when no plausible trigger is evident or a new medicine may be involved; do not stop prescribed medication without guidance.
Seek earlier dermatology care for discrete bald patches, scalp pain, redness, thick scale, pustules, scarring, eyebrow loss or many broken hairs. Those findings are not the typical presentation of telogen effluvium and may require a different evaluation. Sudden hair loss accompanied by serious systemic illness should be assessed in the context of that illness.
What to clarify with your clinician
Ask whether the distribution and scalp examination fit telogen effluvium or suggest overlapping pattern hair loss. Discuss which parts of your health timeline are relevant, whether any targeted tests are appropriate, and how progress should be monitored. If minoxidil, platelet-rich plasma or supplements are proposed, ask what problem each option is intended to address and what side effects or limitations apply.

Questions people ask
Does telogen effluvium cause bald patches?
Its usual presentation is shedding distributed across the scalp. Clearly defined bald patches point to another pattern and warrant a clinician's assessment.
Can stress trigger telogen effluvium?
A major psychological or physical stress can shift follicles into the resting phase, but illness, childbirth, dietary restriction, deficiencies, thyroid problems and medication changes are other possible triggers.
Should I take hair supplements for telogen effluvium?
Supplements are most relevant when evaluation identifies a deficiency or a specific dietary need. Taking high doses without that information may be ineffective or harmful.
