Hair regrowth can lag behind control of the underlying process, so photographs taken under similar lighting can be more useful than daily mirror checks. Surgical restoration is not a first response to an unexplained or actively changing patch.

Arrange an appointment when a bald spot is new, spreading, recurring or accompanied by eyebrow, eyelash or nail changes. Obtain prompt assessment if the scalp becomes painful, hot, swollen, crusted or drains pus, or if fever develops. A scaly patch with broken hairs should also be checked soon, especially when others at home have scalp symptoms.
