Allergy testing for adults

Common approaches include skin-prick tests and allergen-specific blood tests. Neither should be used as a stand-alone explanation for vague symptoms or as an unrestricted screening panel.

Skin-prick testing checks for a local skin response after tiny amounts of chosen allergens touch lightly pricked skin. Blood testing measures allergen-specific IgE and can be considered when skin disease, medicine use or another clinical factor makes skin testing difficult.

Either test can identify sensitisation, which means the immune system recognises a substance. A clinical allergy is diagnosed only when the result fits reproducible symptoms after exposure. A positive result without a matching history may not require avoidance, while a negative result may need further assessment if the history is compelling.

Tests marketed for food intolerance that measure IgG answer a different question and are not substitutes for a clinical allergy assessment.

Write down what happened, how soon it began after exposure, which body systems were affected, what treatment helped and whether the pattern recurred. Photographs of a rash and ingredient labels can be useful when available.

Bring a complete medicine list. Certain medicines can change skin-test responses, yet stopping them without individual guidance may be unsafe. Continue prescribed treatment unless the allergy service tells you exactly what to pause and when.

Avoid removing broad groups of foods solely because a panel is positive. Unnecessary restriction can complicate nutrition and make the true trigger harder to identify.

Call emergency services for breathing difficulty, swelling of the tongue or throat, faintness, collapse, or a rapidly developing reaction affecting more than one body system. If you have an adrenaline auto-injector, use it according to your emergency plan and do not delay seeking help.

Arrange a prompt medical review after any suspected severe reaction even if symptoms settled, because future testing and an action plan require careful supervision.

Find out which diagnosis the proposed test is checking, how medicine or skin conditions may influence it, and what result would change your care. Ask whether a supervised challenge is needed and request clear instructions for handling another reaction.
