Allergy testing through a blood sample

It can help investigate immediate-type allergies to selected foods, pollens, animals, moulds, or dust mites. It does not diagnose every type of adverse reaction and cannot, by itself, confirm that exposure causes symptoms.

The laboratory looks for IgE antibodies directed at named allergens in a blood sample. A detected antibody indicates sensitisation. The clinician then checks whether the result fits the timing and character of previous reactions.

Blood testing may be considered when widespread eczema makes skin testing difficult, when a medicine cannot safely be interrupted, or when direct skin testing is unsuitable. The useful panel is guided by likely exposures rather than every available allergen.

Tell the clinician what you ate, touched, inhaled, or were stung by; how soon symptoms appeared; and what treatment was needed. Mention eczema, asthma, current medicines, and previous severe reactions. Follow the laboratory’s ordinary preparation instructions rather than stopping medicines without advice.

When results return, review the tested allergens one by one. A matching result may support avoidance and an action plan; a mismatch may need reconsideration, targeted skin testing, or a supervised challenge. Broad food restriction based only on the report can cause unnecessary dietary limitations.

Emergency symptoms include difficult or noisy breathing, throat tightness, fainting, collapse, or a rapidly progressing reaction after possible contact with an allergen. Call emergency services and use prescribed adrenaline according to your action plan.

Do not wait for blood-test results during an active reaction. New wheeze, significant swelling, repeated vomiting, or widespread hives after exposure warrants prompt clinical assessment, even if an earlier test was negative.

Ask why each allergen was selected, what the reported level means for your particular history, and whether cross-reactivity may affect interpretation. Clarify whether further testing could change the plan and which symptoms should trigger your emergency instructions.
