Patch testing places selected allergens on the back under small chambers and checks for a delayed skin response. It differs from skin prick testing, which is designed for immediate allergic reactions and does not routinely identify cosmetic contact dermatitis.

Irritant contact dermatitis results from direct damage to the skin barrier and may follow strong cleansers, acids, repeated washing, or layered active products. Allergic contact dermatitis is an immune response to an ingredient and may appear after prior use without trouble. Both can cause redness, itching, scaling, or swelling, so appearance alone may not separate them.

Common assessment targets include fragrances, preservatives, hair-dye chemicals, and ingredients in nail or adhesive products. The relevant choice depends on every product that touches the affected area, including cleansers, sunscreen, makeup, shampoo, and topical medicines.

Stop using the suspected product on inflamed skin, keep its packaging, and photograph the ingredient list. Bring all relevant product names to the appointment. Tell the clinician about steroid creams, tablets, pregnancy, extensive eczema, and any adhesive reactions because these details can affect the testing plan.

A home use test on the forearm cannot exclude allergy and may aggravate an existing reaction. After formal testing, use the ingredient names supplied by the clinic to check labels; marketing terms such as hypoallergenic or natural do not identify whether your particular allergen is absent.

Get prompt medical advice for a rash that is rapidly spreading, blistering, weeping, painful, involving the eyes, or showing possible infection such as increasing warmth and pus. Facial swelling deserves urgent assessment, particularly if it is progressing.

Call emergency services for breathing difficulty, throat tightness, faintness, or swelling of the tongue or lips. These symptoms are not typical of delayed contact dermatitis and require immediate evaluation regardless of the product involved.

Ask which ingredients will be tested, whether your own products can be assessed, how to care for the test area, and when readings will occur. If a reaction is confirmed, request written names and synonyms for the ingredient plus suitable alternatives for skin care.
