Allergy medicine for a runny nose and sneezing

Medicine choice should account for symptom timing, drowsiness risk, age, pregnancy, health conditions, and any other cold or allergy products already being used.

Allergic rhinitis often presents with bouts of sneezing, thin clear discharge, nasal or eye itching, and symptoms linked to a place, season, animal, or dusty task. House dust mite and pet allergies can cause this pattern. Fever, body aches, a new persistent cough, or feeling distinctly unwell can accompany viral illnesses instead.

Nasal symptoms alone cannot identify the cause with certainty. A clinician may consider the sequence of symptoms, known exposures, examination findings, and whether treatment aimed at allergy changes the pattern.

Choose one product with a clearly identified active ingredient and follow its instructions. Less-sedating antihistamines are often preferred when driving or working requires alertness, although individual responses vary. Nasal corticosteroid sprays work locally and require regular, correct use; direct the nozzle slightly outward rather than towards the nasal septum.

Saline spray or rinse can clear mucus and allergens. Wash bedding as appropriate for the fabric, damp-dust surfaces, and keep animals out of the sleeping area if those exposures reliably trigger symptoms. Avoid prolonged use of decongestant nasal sprays because rebound congestion can follow. Seek pharmacist guidance before giving a product to a child or mixing it with cough and cold remedies.

Get emergency help for breathing difficulty, throat tightness, collapse, or rapid swelling of the lips or tongue. Urgent assessment is also appropriate for severe headache with neck stiffness, confusion, blue or grey lips, or marked breathing effort.

Book a medical appointment when symptoms keep returning without a clear trigger, disrupt sleep, occur with wheezing, produce frequent nosebleeds, or fail to improve with correctly used treatment. One-sided blockage, a foul-smelling discharge, or substantial facial pain also deserves examination.

Describe when and where attacks begin, possible animal or dust exposure, every product already tried, and whether wheeze or eye symptoms occur. Ask for a technique check if you use a nasal spray and whether a targeted allergy evaluation would change management.
