Allergy medicine for cough and runny nose

A non-drowsy antihistamine may reduce sneezing, itching, and watery nasal discharge. A steroid nasal spray can calm nasal inflammation, especially when blockage or postnasal drip is prominent. Neither should be expected to settle a cough caused by influenza, COVID-19, pneumonia, asthma, reflux, or a medicine side effect.

Allergic rhinitis often presents with repeated sneezing, an itchy nose or eyes, and clear discharge after exposure to a trigger such as pets or dust mites. Mucus draining down the throat can provoke a dry cough. Fever, body aches, a sore throat, or feeling generally unwell fit an infection more closely, although symptoms can overlap and a diagnosis cannot be made from mucus colour alone.

Limit contact with a known trigger when practical, rinse exposed skin or hair after heavy exposure, and consider saline nasal spray. Take medicines exactly as labelled and inspect multi-symptom cold products for duplicate antihistamines. Drowsy antihistamines can impair alertness and may interact with alcohol, sleeping tablets, or other sedating medicines.

If symptoms recur, keep a brief note of timing, location, possible triggers, fever, and breathing changes. This can help a clinician distinguish allergy from infection or an airway problem. Children, pregnant or breastfeeding people, and anyone with long-term health conditions should confirm a suitable product and dose with a pharmacist or doctor.

Get urgent medical help for severe breathing difficulty, blue or grey lips, chest pain, confusion, fainting, coughing up blood, or swelling of the tongue or throat. Seek prompt advice if breathing is noisy, wheezing is new, fluids cannot be kept down, fever is persistent, or symptoms are worsening rather than settling. A cough that continues, disrupts sleep repeatedly, or occurs with unexplained weight loss needs clinical review.
