What should you know about allergies post nasal drip cough?

Inflamed nasal tissue produces mucus that may move down the back of the throat. Throat irritation and repeated clearing can then trigger coughing, often alongside sneezing, nasal blockage, or itchy eyes.

Allergic rhinitis often presents with clear nasal discharge, itching and symptoms linked to pollen, dust, mould or animals. The cough may be more noticeable when lying down because secretions collect at the back of the throat.

Cough also occurs with asthma, viral infections, acid reflux and several airway conditions. Wheeze or breathlessness may point toward airway narrowing; fever and feeling acutely unwell may accompany infection; a sour taste or burning behind the breastbone can accompany reflux. These clues guide assessment but do not establish a diagnosis alone.

Limit exposure to a suspected trigger when the link is consistent, and consider saline nasal rinsing with sterile, distilled, or previously boiled and cooled water. Fluids may ease throat dryness. Smoke, incense and strong fragrances can aggravate coughing even when they are not the original allergen.

A pharmacist or doctor can advise on an antihistamine or anti-inflammatory nasal spray. Correct spray direction matters: aim slightly outward, away from the nasal septum, and use it regularly as instructed. Avoid combining cough, cold and allergy products without checking their active ingredients.

Get urgent medical help for severe breathing difficulty, blue or grey lips, coughing up blood, chest pain, confusion, or swelling of the throat or tongue. Sudden breathing symptoms after an exposure should be treated as urgent rather than watched at home.

Arrange a consultation if the cough persists, repeatedly interrupts sleep, is accompanied by wheeze, or keeps returning without a clear seasonal or exposure pattern. Assessment may include listening to the lungs, reviewing medicines, and checking whether asthma, reflux, infection or chronic cough better explains the problem.

Describe when the cough starts, whether it is dry or produces mucus, and any nasal, digestive or breathing symptoms. Ask whether your pattern fits allergic rhinitis, how long to try treatment, which inhaled or nasal medicines need technique checks, and what change should prompt follow-up.
